The sad 29th anniversary of the 1986 EDSA people power ‘revolution’

Another EDSA “people power” anniversary, another traffic jam. These commemorations of that now-debatable “revolution” have become bigger and bigger national cringes with each passing year. But this year’s “celebration” was particularly noteworthy as it features a government that is now on the run from its own “bosses”.

Police in anti-riot armour were out in full force today blocking protesters from joining in what was supposed to be a commemoration of the day Filipinos’ freedom to openly express their political views was supposedly regained.

Suffice to say, heavy police presence in this event further convinced people that the government of Philippine President Benigno Simeon ‘BS’ Aquino III was shittin’ bricks today. Not surprising, considering the tide of public opinion has now turned against the former child star of this hallowed tradition. Thanks to a horrific massacre of 44 police officers in the hands of a terrorist organisation the Philippine government has been negotiating with for years, Filipinos are now seeing red rather than yellow whenever they see the Son of Cory.

What is the future of the yellow-branded EDSA “people power” “revolution” now that the pre-eminent scion of the Aquino-Cojuangco clan has not only been disgraced by years of incompetent presidency but also disowned by his real boss, Uncle Peping?

The only way the EDSA tradition can continue into the foreseeable future is if it grows up and starts becoming more consistent with the bigger country and its national colours.

Yellow, though once revered as the symbol of the Laban! (“Fight!”) movement started by the president’s father, the late Benigno ‘Ninoy’ Aquino Jr, is now a severely devalued political colour. It no longer deserves a place in the venerated space around monuments put up in memory of the “spirit” of a long-gone fight for freedom.

  1. plus if they were planning on closing of the a section of the country’s major thoroughfare located on one of the business districts, why didn’t they make it a regular holiday? seriously, one of the most bone headed moves ever. The traffic earlier was probably worse than the traffic caused by that stupid MMFF parade last December wherein they closed another major road on a work day!

  2. The YelllowTard “Laban” is now overused and obsolete. There is nothing to “Laban”. Marcos is already dead for more than thirty years. And, these “Laban” people are in power and fighting each other (Laban way), to steal from the National Treasury; thru DAP, PDAF, Pork Barrels, etc…

They are like dogs growling each other for the bones…

Their leader Aquino is incompetent and a thief. He sold a portion of sovereignty to the MILF/ISIS/Al Queda….he financed them, also..

  3. Funny thing is, the L-shaped hand gesture “Laban”! Is “Loser” in other countries. But I digress.

Also, I like how the local media tries to downplay these protests and saying that the police officers are there to “keep cleanliness”.

Its obvious who’s pulling the strings.

    1. The word ‘Yellow’ is also synonymous with ‘coward’, which I guess is pretty appropriate as well, given the circumstance.

  4. When a single lane of edsa is closed for concrete reblocking, we all know what happens. So what were they thinking when they decided to close a whole stretch. Idiots! And please, do not tell us motorists what alternate routes to take, coz we know them already! And it DOES NOT WORK! We take these so called alternate routes every effin day, so please, don’t ever consider this as an excuse to close edsa, stupid!

  5. The most important kind of freedom is to be what you really are. You trade in your reality for a role. You trade in your sense for an act. You give up your ability to feel, and in exchange, put on a mask. There can’t be any large-scale revolution until there’s a personal revolution, on an individual level. It’s got to happen inside first.
