What Marian Rivera’s fan base reveals about Philippine society

It suddenly occurred to me why Marian Rivera has so many frothing fans. It’s because she looks sosyal but sounds palengkera. The psychology there being that there is some sort of perverted appeal to seeing a person who looks like she comes from the colonial elite speaking the language of the masa.

Yeah, I get it now. Marian Rivera is the embodiment of Filipinos’ collective nosebleed — the bright star representing the answer to the popular admonishment: Tagalugin mo na lang!

And so here we are, wondering all the while why Filipinos do not see the obvious solution to their ignoramity — to become part of the elite, one needs to learn the language of the colonial master. Sounds pretty straightforward, doesn’t it?

Apparently to da Pinoy masa the easier way to go is to simply sneer at English speakers and surround themselves in the comfy world of mediocre Tagalogdom. Rather than step up and embrace the language of global intellectualism, they embrace the dialects of mediocrity and assure one another that they are “special”. Marian Rivera is the idol that validates that aspiration.

Well, so much for that.

I used to cringe whenever I find myself in the midst of a din of call center accented English whenever I drop by certain Starbucks stores for the occassional latte. But now I realize that I need to give these call center folk a bit of credit. At least they consciously and deliberately worked on improving their English and productively worked with the hand dealt them. Yeah, of course not all of us grew up in a household that encourages the use of English. In a sense, those who did were simply born into royalty. Now I take my hat off to those who were born into jeje-land but managed to extricate themselves from that pit by learning how to speak English properly and can now hold their own in a conversation without suffering from “nosebleed”.

So, yeah, big difference, like the difference between that conyo kid driving daddy’s car and the self-made guy who graduated from Batino Elementary School driving a car he bought with his own savings.

As for Marian Rivera’s rabid fans? Well, there was something to be said about the way they continued to cling on to that notion of “royalty” following her “royal” wedding to Dingdong Dantes. Now there is also something to be said about how furious they are over the perception that their idol’s supposed archrival, Heart Evangelista, seems to have been given a free pass by the media and bloggers despite what was seen to be an equally ostentatious wedding.

Perhaps these starstruck serfs hadn’t noticed that there was a big national crisis currently on-going that tied up the bandwidth of certain bloggers they had expected would be saying something about Heart’s marriage to Senator Chiz Escudero. Or simply that strong points had already been made during that whole DongYan Wedding circus that need not be repeated again.

But, hey, this is the Philippines, home to the society with the flattest learning curve in the world. Certain lessons do need to be repeated over and over again. But like the proverbial seeds that land on barren soil, as that parable tells of, there really isn’t much in the way of results we should be holding our breath for.

What was the term some guy used to describe the Philippines some years back? A damaged culture I recall it was. True that. The Philippines does suffer from the mother of all daddy issues. Too bad many of us chose a Spanish-looking palengkera as their therapist. 😀

  1. Whatever kate!!!! You know where i have problem with? Why do u like to label people? Spanish looking palengkera. Com’on kate! Do you really have to be that hateful??? Is she really that bad??? It can’t be that bad, is it???

    1. Because utak showbiz indiots like you are always giving this country a cancer! Also, your whining is full of cheap drama. Go back with your telebasura drama queen!

      1. @ domo:
U talkin’ to yourself? And since when did labeling people become acceptable? If disagreeing to labeling people is called a whiner, then by all means call me a whiner then. I wouldn’t mind. In fact, you should start whining to unacceptable behaviors too. That way you can make a difference to your beloved country. Para mapakinabangan ka nman!. Ha ha.

        P. S. How did you know where i live??? Ha ha.

  2. Amen to that Kate. What struck me most abt the followers of this celebrity is they seem to have selective attention. They read (or hear) another person’s opinion abt a topic connected to their “idol” and everything else is blocked out. The message of the article is completely lost. Like abstraction failed them and is simply not at work anymore. I think it happens automatically and they simply cant process the information at hand. Try as you may to point it out but they will never see. They are simply ignorant. Royalty? Yeah. I hope these people realize what happened to royalty in 18th century France. They were thrown out and the queen was beheaded for living an outlandishly extravagant lifestyle! Ha! So much for royalty.

  3. Kate. . Does it make you feel good to look down on your countrymen? Do you feel high and mighty now that you’ve stepped all over Filipinos, who by the way may be living honest and noble lives despite their being part of the “masa”? Do feel like you’re part of the “elite”? Good for you for learning how to speak American English. Good for you. Now please, learn how to write properly. Learn how to filter your ideas. Maybe someday you’ll get to make an actual social commentary and delve on these issues (ignorance, national apathy, political repression, etc.) with more substance.

    1. Maybe you should re-read:

“I used to cringe whenever I find myself in the midst of a din of call center accented English whenever I drop by certain Starbucks stores for the occassional latte. 2. yes, she does. now go on. non-critical thinkers need not apply. your gray matter has not been applied to anything substantial in years.

    3. @me Don’t generalize Filipinos. I don’t like Rivera and never will so nope, I don’t feel that Kate has looked down on me 🙂

    1. Then go back reading those gossipy showbiz news you drama queen.

Grabe! Mag-public office ka na ‘te! Ikaw na ang magaling! Bobo kaming lahat!

FYI di ako fan ni Marian hahaha

  4. I couldn’t find the necessity of this article other than to bash Marian’s fanbase (who obviously DOES NOT represent the PINOY in the PHIL, lets talk statistic) and humiliate the PINOY in the PHIL (but ending up humiliating oneself)!

I just hope the writer isn’t a Filipino or else hear me say SHAME on YOU! Opps my bad, i can’t help but simply hate PRETENTIOUS people who can’t help but talk rubbish.

And incase the writer isn’t a Filipino, she needs to meet and greet one and even try surf the internet on the English Proficiency of the Pinoy (that somehow statistically represents us PINOY as a whole).

    Here’s one thu:
    https://ph.news.yahoo.com/ph–world-s-best-country-in-business-english.html

      1. Tama domo, but in my experience as an expat English teacher in the Philippines the problem with pinoys and English is not their difficulty with the language but with the culture. You can’t say “Serr you will wait for a while!” and put an American on hold and expect them not to freak out.

  5. Wading through the run-on sentences, grammatical and spelling errors in this poorly-edited article was a chore. It’s ironic, considering the writer’s implied superiority because of her misguided perception regarding her command of the English language. I suggest she broaden her horizons and travel to non-English speaking countries. I hope by then, she’d realize that English isn’t the end all be all mode of communication. I’d like to see her tell someone who’s native Japanese or native Chinese that they should learn English and “embrace the language of global intellectualism.”

I won’t even attempt to understand where the phrase “world of mediocre Tagalogdom” even came from.

      1. Nope Rizal never said that. And it is somewhat contradicted by his other boyhood masterpiece: “A la juventud filipina”

    1. Agreed. Proficiency in a language is not the best measure for intelligence. Unfortunately, Kate thinks she’s better than most because she knows more words.

  6. Since when did Benign0 let idol-apologist bandwagoners take over a comments section like this? It’s substantively the same as most other GRP articles and yet you’re all butthurt because a pretty mestiza was slandered? What did you only find this article after googling your idol Marian? Tama atsaka magandang article to.

How Kate Hated Starstruck Ignoramuses And How Kate Managed to Hide Her Pretensions of Being One!

    According to site urbandictionary:
Ignoramity “is a made up word for use instead of ignorance, just to make the person who said it sound like an intellectual.” Mapagpanggap ba?!

*How can the so-called Starstruck Ignoramuses be the Problem if the Pretending GRP Writer is a Starstruck Ignoramus Herself! Tinimbang Ka, Ngunit Kulang!

    -From ChinoF-
“Filipinos really need a wholesale change in attitude. They need to throw aside showbiz kilig and start demanding better, more intellectual elements in Filipino entertainment content. Stop sanitizing bakya and start building, rather than killing, brain cells.”

-From Kate Natividad- (A KAPAL-MILYA FANTADRD! MAYBE THE REASON WHY SHE HATES MARIAN SO MUCH!)
“What do women want nga ba talaga? Obviously romance sells. The lot of cheesy movies and telenovelas themed on love and romance attests to this. I haven’t seen it yet (though I plan to see it, time permitting) but the latest kilig-fest The Mistress, I heard, is a big hit.” (“Showbiz Kilig: What Intelligent People Don’t Have” ChinoF says what?!)

“…what made Anne Curtis crabby enough to slap the uber-guapo JLC. I mean, hey, how crazy does one have to be to wanna do that? Miss Curtis, pwede ba? JLC was made to be loved, not slapped. (PATAY NA PATAY SA KILIG! KATE INTENSELY ADORES UBER-GUAPO JOHN-LLOYD CRUZ SHE REPRIMANDS ANNE CURTIS. SHE CAN BUY YOU!)

“Looks like we’ve all been had by 50 Shades. But who cares? It was a good show. And, surprisingly, the movie made me think — which is a good thing.” (NAKAKABOBO BA? Kate doesn’t care? It was a good show!)

**How can she offer a solution to a Damaged Culture when she doesnt even have an Identification with a Culture of her own! The Narcissist who hates and refuses to identify with anything NOT SOSYAL! (dialects of mediocrity, mediocre Tagalogdom)

“Apparently to da Pinoy masa the easier way to go is to simply sneer at English speakers and surround themselves in the comfy world of mediocre Tagalogdom. Rather than step up and embrace the language of global intellectualism, they embrace the dialects of mediocrity and assure one another that they are “special”.”

  9. After wasting my few seconds on this article all i can say is, the writer in an attempt to insult Marian Rivera and her pinoy fans downgraded the entire filipinos as being stupid below her stupidity too. I said pinoy fans because I am one of Marian’s numerous fans who isn’t a filipino and over here where I come from articles like this are flushed in the toilet. To you kate, it must be quite painful for you to see a beautiful meztisa making an honest living despite her deficiency is english language according to you. The irony of it all is your name became relevant because you used the name ‘Marian Rivera and her fans’. I hope you know it’s inevitable that after few takes on this by your sponsors, you are back to being a hungry tabloid writer and a nobody but Marian Rivera Dantes is already a household name and a legend. As you can see all the way from Malaysia I have something to say about her. She has a name in Africa, America, Asia etc. She’s touched so many lives positively to last a life time. Can anyone say the same about you? I wonder what the level of your anger was writing this because even your English is begging for help. Trash people occupying space meant for real writers

    1. It makes sense, in Malaysia its pretty normal to throw other people’s opinions “in the toilet”. Don’t throw a precious Koran there though or you all will freak out. And don’t you dare pretend Americans care about some mestiza Filipina celebrity, we created Angelina Jolie NO ONE here (in the US where I live) without pinoy ancestry knows or cares who these professional weepers are. Stop deluding yourself, and don’t log onto this site unless you want a hard dose of the truth.

      1. @PhanBoi That’s why you pinoys do menial jobs ( not that anything is wrong with that) more than anyone else abroad because you hate something good and beautiful. You can do anything you like to bring down one person who gives you name outside your so called comfort zone. Yes Marian speaks tagalog so what’s wrong with that? Only filipinos give a hook about what americans think because they give so much attention to a language they can’t even speak well. I’m sure the writer of this trash can hide herself under her keyboard when she isn’t a Marian Rivera whom everyone got to hear her speak on and off air. Don’t be in denial because there’s no outer of truth in this trash but rather a display of bitterness from a lonely soul who makes a living by collecting pennies from another lonely soul.

        1. You should really tell your Kate to take a chill pills and there she goes because writing one after another trashy articles about Marian Rivera and her fans just makes her more pathetic than she already is. Let’s face it, Marian has more fans outside Philippines than any other pinoy artist. Kate should ask herself how she manages to pull that off even with her set back in english language. she can write million articles just to slander Marian and her fans but at the end she is the bitch who pays bills on dirty money.

        2. I am not pinoy, I am American, I stated that very clearly. You evidently do not read or pay attention to what people write, so there is no reason to pay attention to you.

        3. My skin is a delicious shade of white that would make you squee and try to make babies with me in the vain hope of creating the next mestiza golden calf for the ignorant to worship. Fortunately my mother raised me with morals and I have better things to do with my time. And seriously, don’t kid yourself, I had no idea who Mariana whats her face was before I read this article.

    2. wow. the indictment of the philippine education system in full display here. to quote a movie, “never go full retard” hahahah..

You said on the last part of this sh!t na damaged ang culture ng pinas? Well, bakit kailangang i-highlight mo ang foreign language? At wag mo gagamitin ang lahing pinoy dahil hindi lahat ay fan ni marian like you, obviously. Lalo lang madadamage culture ng pinas.
Be mindful sa mga sinusulat mo. Kung dudura ka, sa baba, hindi nakatingala

  11. I’ll just say that Kate and the Marian fangirls are both immature brats for reasons the rest of your lives will hopefully reveal, let the whole lot quibble on, and flee from this article.

    Adieu.

    1. 😀 You should try taking them on once in a while. Kahit na they worship Manny Pacquiao one or two punches and they go down for the count, they don’t know how to argue rational points past one or two conversation exchanges. They’re like one of those Cebu-manufactured illegal handguns that fire one bullet tapos wala na siyang pakinabang.

  12. *Sigh*

Okay, here’s what I think of all this. Let’s shift the light away from Marian Rivera for a moment. Let’s talk UFC, let’s talk Ronda Rousey.

I’m willing to admit that I’m a fan of Rousey. Yeah, she’s one of the best ones out there. Her opponents never really last very long.

However, I am also willing to admit that she’s a horrible person. She is very unsportswoman-like with her opponents. She’s a bit of a sore winner. So if Kate ever decides to bash her about her bad attitude, I won’t really mind.

Bottom line, Marian isn’t really someone that relevant to our lives just Ronda isn’t really a vital part of my life. I’m not trying to defend Kate or anything, I’m just saying that these people definitely have a bad side to them that we just can’t ignore.

P.S.: Besides, if Marian ever makes the mistake of pissing Ronda off… My money won’t be on Marian…

    😉

    1. Aaawww! Mr. Grimwald of GRP is also a FAN!

“I’m willing to admit that I’m a fan of Rousey.”

Uma-Idol din pala ang mga Intelligentsia! Nothing wrong with that really But is there any difference kapag Masa?

She might treat you also as STARSTRUCK IGNORAMUS!

If you may ask me I prefer a match-up of Ronda vs. Kate! Let’s see the mettle/spunk of this Punk!

  13. I don’t know what the exact purpose of the article really is. Is it to criticize those people who admire Marian Rivera for being what she is or to criticize those people whom the writer think prefer Tagalog instead of English?

Either way the idea espoused is weak or misplaced at the most.

If the intention is to denigrate the adoring fans, it would be cruel for they are practically doing nothing wrong except to swoon and profess their undying love for their idol. What’s wrong with that?

Rivera was not even telling her fans to break the rules by sticking to Tagalog to avoid nosebleed. None of that. If we’re going to talk about promoting the English language for Filipinos to learn and use we should not be talking of Rivera. We should be talking about our education system and how it promotes and spread English in our schools. We should be talking about our leaders regarding the plans and efforts they have in regard to the propagation of the English language. We have lots and lots of teachers abroad doing jobs other than teaching. They are better and far more qualified to teach English to our people than Marian Rivera. Why not talk about them?

We want to improve fluency and consistency in English? We should stop talking about showbiz.

Rivera is not a teacher, she’s an entertainer. The idea of making her the present version of Nora Aunor (the bakya-crowd remember?) is understandable for majority of her followers are from the ‘masa’. However, that is where the irony lies. Why expect the less educated, the poor and the distraught to even pay attention to English? Why criticize them for engaging on entertainment they can afford? Nora Aunor or Vilma Santos were never tasked to promote the English language during their time simply because it was not their business to do so.

I say, if I’m the judge and this article is a case brought before my court, my decision would be on the side of the fans of Marian Rivera.

    Not guilty.

    1. Hi jameboy, I like your opinion because it is obviously not driven by emotions such jealousy. I believe that Princess Kate here can never comprehend how a Marian Rivera is liked by many and amassing wealth in exponential rate despite her non stellar wit (as per Princess Kate). I love the fact that you emphasized that she seems to be barking at the wrong tree, but what do you expect from a jealous turd?

BTW, kudos to you Kate for making Marian Rivera more famous! You think you can pull her down by writing nasty things about her? (Just like your newly written article, you’re really becoming pathetic now, honestly.) You are nowhere diffent from the people you are criticizing. Di ka kasi sumisikat, ano? that’s why kailangan dumikit ka sa pangalang Marian Rivera, so people would even expend their to seconds to your blog. Pathetic loser!

  14. “Class never tries to build itself up by tearing others down. Class is already up and need not strive to look better by making others look worse.”
    Ann Landers

  15. With the number of starstruck ignoramuses and subservient Pinoys in here lambasting the ever beautiful Kate over this article,it makes me think that Hong Kong will open more job opportunities for them if you know what I mean….

  16. Kate Natividad, I think is the “DJ Moe Twister” of Marian Rivera.

What do I mean by that? Remember when Charice was at the top of her game, GLEE, #8 album on US billboard 200, earned $18 million in less than four years, a $2.2M house in Los Angeles, TV guest appearances in the US, new American accent, performed private parties for Hollywoods rich and famous with music producer David Foster, X Factor PH judge, blond hair, big bodyguards when she traveled, Charice was at that time, the most hated entertainer in the Philippines.

Enter DJ Moe Twister, that evil spirited rumor monger on his show, took without ceasing labeled Charice every name he could to bring her down. DJ Moe Twister in some ways, later succeeded in his hate campaign against Charice that I think have reduced Charice’ status and value as an entertainer today.

Marian Rivera and Kris Aquino are the prime hate targets in entertainment today. So loyal Marian fans, what can you do about it? Hate Kate or love Kate?

  17. What Kate did here is genius, literally all the habits of Filipinos that retard their progress are on display in the comments here: bandwagoning, self-righteousness, ad-hominem tactics, total lack of rationality or accountability in arguments, inability to recognize the absurdity of their invalid sources of information, God it never ends.

  18. “It’s because she looks sosyal but sounds palengkera.” Grabe manlait tong nagsulat. Dare her to say this to Marian’s face. Judgmental. Kung ganun, edi mukhang palengkera but sounds sosyal si Kate hahahaha. O wag aangal. Dapat proud ka dito, Kate. Preferable to kaysa sa description mo kay Marian.

  19. ITT:
    1. Filipinos who think they’re better than other Filipinos.
    2. Filipinos who’re always shaking their heads at “the masa.”
    3. Filipinos who write about how corrupt and hopeless the Philippines is, yet are the ones silently exercising corruption in everyday things too.
    4. Filipinos who see themselves as victims of other people’s actions. Always.

  20. As if Marian is the most sought actress in the Philippines. Let’s not be too judgmental here just because she doesn’t speak fluent in English. Probably she is destined not to be a public speaker or a call center agent but a model or an actress (as she is really are). It just happen that she has this beautiful face that you can envy of. And because of this envious traits a human have, we point out what this Marian have the least. I just don’t get why Marian should represent Filipino per se. I hope the writer doesn’t belong in the Filipino society if so, did she just criticize herself?

  21. I never expect a GRP writer stoop on the level what she calls ‘fantards’. Terms like ‘palengkera’ are being used in social media by ‘fantards’ of celebrities to bash another.

I’m not a fan of Marian and will never be but I think the author is a basher masking herself as an intelligent and opinionated writer. She’s been writing articles about Marian since her wedding with Dingdong.

  22. I don’t care what you say kate! The truth is, if it bothered you that dongyan spent a lot of money on their wedding, it should then bother you even more that heart-chiz spent three times more of that of dongyan’s. Double-standard? You righteous elite blogger. Oh, you’re soo good!!!

And btw, when you write, can you please just do it in plain and simple english? Is that too much to ask or is that a little bit waaaayyy too low for you, you english speaking elite?! Who are you writing for ba? I thought you guys want to educate people? Didn’t you just all say pinoys don’t know how to speak english? How are they gonna learn from you then? You’re kinda defeating the purpose, don’t you think? You all seem to be writing for your fellow bloggers. Kayo kayo lang ang nagkakaintindihan. Palaliman ba ng english ang labanan dito? Kayo-kayo na nga lang, naglolokahan pa! If you really have to say it in english, just make it plain and simple then. And then you all claim that the readers don’t get the message of your blog. Well, i have a message to you too…..Just make it plain and simple ok!!!

Is it just me or a lot of readers can share the same sentiments? Just wondering.

  23. Tang ina tong author.

    1. You sound bitter Jade calm down. It’s an article specifically designed to flamebait diehard emotionalist. And many fell for it.

      1. WR, you’re giving Kate too much credit. I doubt she did this to troll fans of Marian Rivera. It feels more like she was on a deadline and didn’t stop to think how self-righteous she sounds.

        1. Instead of focusing on:

          1) The content of Kate’s article;
          2) What is readily given in the content

…guys like you decided to focus on:

          1) Her “character”, as you perceive it;
          2) Her intentions and motives, as you perceive it;
          3) The tone of the article, as you perceive it, and;
          4) Her bitterness toward Dongyan fans, as you perceive it.

Come on guys, attacking her person, etc., will not refute the arguments she made here. It only makes you guys look bad because you can’t make your points properly.

          Matuto naman kayo, pwede ba?

        2. Good thing this author is the only thing being argued here. If we evaluated our politicians’ like how Amir evaluates this argument, we’d really be swimming in our own bs. Pero okay lang. “Journalist” lang naman to. No biggie.

        1. Jade, there are only two people I’ve ever met who try to accuse internet posters as masquerading as someone they are not because they simply can’t accept that rational people might agree with the person they’re bandwagoning against: American children and Filipino adults.

  24. I applaud you for your candor, Kate and for saying it like it is. Thank you for your courage and your keen insight and observation regarding her rabid fans and the palengkera queen herself.

  25. As usual, Fans think that Kate is bashing Marian when she’s not. I believe that this is a persona of Marian and it’s not who she really is –she acts like a palengkera in order to relate to the masses. Maybe the real Marian is an intelligent woman but unfortunately, Filipinos are anti-intellectual. I don’t get why Filipinos lack comprehension, wait, nevermind. It’s because they’re too butthurt and react too quickly even though they don’t know what was being said. Marian doesn’t even care, so why would they? She probably doesn’t read this site and doesn’t know this site even exists.

  27. Go go go Kate ! You tell them palengkera to stick it where the sun don’t shine. You made my dull life feeling funky again…I hate those hypocrites flaunting the wealth thy stumble upon ! With no regards where it come from…blood , sweat and shit?

  30. “What Marian Rivera’s fan base reveals about Philippine society”:

That we Filipinos adulate the “mestizo/mestiza” look so much that we’ll even go as far as redefine the standard of our people’s attractiveness by who closely resemble the Caucasian features. This goes to show that we Filipinos are repulsed by the banality of our “Kayumanggi” appearance, and are willing to water it down by trying to breed with the Caucasian race so we’ll have little “mestizo” children to flaunt around.
