Filipinos have started counting the cost of a 26-year swindle

As we start a week of no trial sessions and face the prospect of several days of separation anxiety over not seeing our favourite characters in the on-going drama of Chief Justice Renato Corona’s impeachment, it may be worth looking back and getting a sanity check on what really got us to this point. We are here because we as a people do not think. Thinking is an immense challenge in Philippine society — because Filipinos are not raised to think, not encouraged to think, and not expected to think.

The low bar applied in the way Filipinos regard one another is evident at the very threads that weave the fabric of Philippine society. The most obvious and most currently-relevant example is in the way the impeachment complaint against Corona was initiated and pushed to the corner we see it languishing in today. It was sloppily-written (“pwede na yan”) and given the go signal by 188 chumps many of whom hadn’t taken the time to study it carefully (“bahala na”). The manner with which it was conceived alone already made the artifact that they call the “Articles of Impeachment” by itself an insult to the intelligence of educated Filipinos. So long before Senator-Judge Miriam Defensor-Santiago first came up to the podium and called out “Spade!”, the prosecution team of this trial had already delivered their indictment — not of Corona but of the Filipino people. Quite obviously back then the prosecution team had already decided that Filipinos are idiots — gago. Indeed, only the underlying assumption that Filipinos are idiots could’ve possibly given the the prosecution team the foundational confidence to rally behind such an obviously flawed campaign in the manner with which they did.

So Senator Santiago called the prosecution team “gago” in the last session of the trial on the 29th February 2012. Predictably in a society long renowned for being populated by an onion-skinned people, Santiago drew the ire of the multitude of the personally-offended.

But if we step back from the quaint sense of personal offense that traces its roots from within the depths of our uniquely-fragile national ego, we will find that Senator Santiago was actually giving back to the prosecution team tit-for-tat. The prosecution team, after all, started it. In the vernacular, ginago nila ang mga Pilipino. They had built an entire campaign to oust Corona on the simple assumption that Filipinos will simply lap it all up — like idiots. And as such, they did not bother to do a good job — perpetuating much of the same way that Filipinos every day and in every aspect of their lives get substandard products, substandard services, and substandard leaders, simply because those who supply and sell them can.

When will this cycle of banal mediocrity end? It will end when we step up and assert our right to be given superior products. Senator Miriam Santiago did that for us over the course of the impeachment trial by being the loud and annoying voice of what intelligent consumers should be. We are, after all, ultimately the ones paying for this big circus. We have so far seen most of our Senator-Judges, the Senate President himself, and much of the way the defense team had behaved and played their role measure up to the cost of this spectacle. Only the prosecution and, by extension, the powers in Malacañang that have now desperately come out swinging have proven to be the ones selling us short — even swindling us.

It is ironic that for 26 years, the notion of the “power” of the “people” was held hostage by a clique of feudal lords out to protect their family jewels from the very “people” they habitually wax poetic about. Filipinos are only now beginning to understand how much had already been swindled out of them — kung gaanong kalaki ang halaga na ginago sa kanila. Better late than never. Senator Miriam Santiago has so far been hugely instrumental in getting that effort of accounting started for us. Perhaps Hacienda Luisita is really not that unreasonable an item to include in our growing ledger of receivables.

  1. “We are here because we as a people do not think. Thinking is an immense challenge in Philippine society — because Filipinos are not raised to think, not encouraged to think, and not expected to think.”

Though I would say I don’t agree, it has the truthiness in it.

In my mind, it’s always the peer pressure (or mob mentality) and the ability to comprehend.

As I have claimed in this blog before, for example, advocates for the due process in Corona’s case articulate their argument intelligently. I can only make a supposition that they are independent minded and have comprehended every related issue of the day.

    1. As opposed to the rest of hoi polloi, who just soak up whatever they can get from media outlets with their own biases (ABS-CBN, I’m looking at you!) and make conclusions based on what they read, see, and/or hear without regard for the contexts.

May award ba na Most Unbiased News Organization/Reporting Show in the Philippines?

        5. Sa mga bobong tulad ni Vincenzo:

The Lopezes are one arrogant schmucks since they belong to the oligarchy. ABS-CBN rose to prominence during the Cory days.

Aside from canneries and breweries, Cory also gave us ABS-CBN. That’s not even progress if you ask me. 😛

        6. It’s really hilarious this shortsighted fool is also subscribed to this contemporary Filipino idiosyncrasy called “Network Wars.” His way of words to exalt this nexus of lies and brainwashing that ABS-CBN is something to take note of.

Again, never far from an enemy of the truth, the people, and a disciple of a messed up status quo.

        7. @vicenzo

        8. Pfft yeah right. #1 for being the most biased TV network in the whole Philippines. You fail “genius”.

        9. bakit nandyan pa sila? Because the 1987 constitution prohibits foreign companies from entering sectors deemed “vital” to national interests, such as media.

        10. The Lopez clan were universally despised in the late 60’s for throwing a grandiose and very expensive party in Manila (with European royalty, no less) at a time when the country was in a bad way. The were publicly censured by no less than Old Marcos himself. Don Eugenio decided there and then that Marcos was an enemy, and Marcos obliged by jailing some Lopezes and confiscating ABS-CBN during Martial Law. Lopez family are NOT Philippine pillars of good society; they’re wannabe trash who just happened to be rich. And they’re making sure that every other Filipino is dumbed down enough to believe that ABS-CBN and the Lopez family are the best to ever happen to the Philippines.

    2. According to the Brazilian educator Paolo Freire, the poor who are the silent majority, who have been oppressed for a long time, have no capacity to objectify their experience, and, therefore, they look at their predicament as fate, thus fatalism. It is the fatalism of the poor that makes them accept whatever reality besets them. They think the way their oppressors think about themselves. And when they get out of their oppressed state, they become the new oppressors because that is their concept of how to behave as human persons.

In another context Freire mentions about the “massification” of society in which the people think the way public opinion, shaped by media, thinks. They have no capacity to think for themselves.

Going to the point, our problem as a people is that we have been ruled by self-interest and personal survival, at various levels, down to the marginalized poor (especially them), therefore we could not move forward as a nation. Who is really concerned with nation-building or with equality and social justice? Even the very poor for whom many have appointed themselves as their defenders, would easily sell their souls to whoever could feed them. Felix Drerzinski could be right when he said that all that counts for man is his own survival.

Probably when the elite begins to distribute their land to the poor, at no cost, or when the ruling dynasties begins to be disinterested in politics, then that would be the beginning of true social transformation.

  2. While we’re on the topic of swindling, it seems the Corona Resign CORE Facebook Group is going under or will be limiting its activities for a while.

This after Jim Sarthou was apparently castigated for cozying up to one too many people who are associated with pro-corona groups, like the IBP.

    Here’s an excerpt:

Some Yellow members who are just as conservative and prudish like their Saint Cory, apparently didn’t like the fact that Jim was cozying up to Trixie — who is also the Integrated Bar of the Philippines Spokesperson for its Impeachment Watch.

Trixie is not exactly aligned with Corona Resign CORE’s stand on Corona.

Case in point is that Trixie believes that CORE’s current hero, Atty. Vitaliano Aguirre committed a grave error in trading barbs with Senator Judge Miriam Defensor Santiago. In her own words, she says in an article published on ABS-CBN’s news websites:
“For a lawyer to further his cause, it does little good him to disrespect a judge in his own courtroom. It endangers his client and his client’s cause,” she said.

Trixie says Aguirre’s “woe is me” appeal for respect from Senator Judge Santiago may have unnecessarily imperiled a case that is already in danger of being thrown out of the Impeachment Court.

What Jim hasn’t told other members of the Corona Resign CORE Group is that Trixie was being tapped to defend Chief Justice Corona!

The rest of the story is here:

    1. Another hearsay.

      1. Oooohh!! Big words little man with smaller brain!

Simpletons that cannot comprehend big picture scenarios tend to lower realities to a level they can pretend to understand and try to make arguments based on it.

So pwede nga natin sabihin na may “corrupt practice” sa prosecution dahil walang valid legal basis ang complaint (no evidence to support accussations) before nila ito pinirmahan?

      2. So what do you call on the charges against Corona set by the prosecution? They’re also based on HEARSAY.

        Crashed and burn. 😛

      3. The inability of this clown to fully spell words even in Tagalog shows much how the incompleteness of thought he has about the issues at hand.

      5. “Another hearsay. Wag nyo siraan ang grupong tnging hangad lamang ay mpaalis ang mga corrupt sa gobyerno”

Big words coming from someone who doesn’t even KNOW what HEARSAY is.

They had built an entire campaign to oust Corona on the simple assumption that Filipinos will simply lap it all up — like idiots.

spot on, benign0. exactly how i see it as well.

akala nila uubra style nila dahil gago tingin nila sa lahat ng pinoy. the proof was in the millions – at least 15 as of the 2010 elections.

if pinoys were known to be of truly decently high standards, the prosecution would have never assumed any of this would fly. and noynoy running for president would have been the stupidest idea in history. but, because we live in reality, we know it’s always worth a try in da land of da pinoy.

    1. “if pinoys were known to be of truly decently high standards, the prosecution would have never assumed any of this would fly. and noynoy running for president would have been the stupidest idea in history. but, because we live in reality, we know it’s always worth a try in da land of da pinoy.”

In other words, PNoy would never have been PNoy, and he would still have three years in the Senate to prove himself instead of making like the useless wanker he had been for twelve years. In addition, Gibo, Gordon, or (long shot!) Perlas would have been President and would focus on the more important aspects of the Philippines, viz. economic reform, and peace and order. Hell, maybe the 1987 Constitution would have been amended to keep up with the times.

      1. @vincenzo: let me tell reply to you without cursing your entire being into the depths of our dear president’s colon.

vincenzo, what you think you know, is what millions of misguided pinoys think they know, which is not a damn iota of nothing. so do us a favor and put that nothingness to good use by shaking your head up as if you’re a barista mixing up a cocktail in your skull, and stfu. ¿comprende, idiota?

      2. Lol what truth moron? Wala na nga silang maipakitang matibay na ebidensya e. You lose “genius” now get lost.

      3. ooooh, looks like the idiot vincenzo is getting butt hurt over the continuing losses of his tito noy and his Loser Team. Get lost you freak, you have already lost this argument

    3. That’s the scary thing though. We all know that the ability of Noynoy and his prosecution gestapo to do things is because of their ability to put one over the limited intellectual faculties of the Filipino public. So the challenge is a lot harder — to sell the right thing to do — which is not a simple matter that can be captured in moronic slogans and symbols — to a public made addicted to moronic slogans and symbols.

  4. Benigs… as always you have hit the nail on the head. Truth is often a hard pill to swallow…and this is something we Filipinos have to accept. Look at all our sanitized history books…this is why we have not learned. We have not begun to tell the truth about ourselves.

I am so amazed at many whom I call friend who cannot get that you cannot clean house using dirty water…it only makes the house dirtier and stinkier. They are so offended by what Senator Miriam did when they themselves are capable of worst.

Until we learn from the lessons of our past…we are doomed to repeat it.

Again I thank you for giving me the courage to speak and fight for what is right…

  5. The truth is a hard pill to swallow… and we Filipinos unfortunately are the worst at taking the bitter pill. We do not like to be openly confronted and take offense even if what the critic is saying is true. So we hide behind niceties…and moral uptitudes… thinking we are better than we actually are. Where has this national ego gotten us? It has brought us happily to the bottom of the Asian economic ladder.

Masakit ang katotohanan…but a lie repeated a million times…is still a lie. We need to learn from the mistakes of our past…if we do not…sadly we will be doomed to repeat it.

BenignO is one such writer who is unafraid to say it like it is…it is not easy to swallow what he says…but if you take just a moment to read what he writes… removing all political biases…maybe just maybe whether you agree with him or not… there is something in his writing worth learning.

    1. u are fighting for the wrong. At yng si Miriam bstos tlga bunganga nyan buti nlang at my nktpat sya pra 2mgl bunganga nya

      1. @Vinzenzo

You are fighting for the wrong? Baka naman totoong gusto mong sabihin is you are fighting for the “left” (kasi opposite ng right mo)?

O sige, baliktarin natin argumento mo.

Double whammy!

      2. “History is written by the victor. History is full of LIES. The only thing you need to change the world is one good lie and a river of BLOOD.” – Capt. John Price

Fact: no justice have happened during the former Cory and the current Noynoy regime. So what about the Mendiola Massacre? Cecilio Arillo’s ‘Greed and Betrayal’ is a great read compared to the history books you have read glorifying and worshiping the Aquinos as demigods or something.

Yes, you’re fighting for the wrong. You’re craving for the dictatorship of the oligarchy. Fools like you should be pitied because you’re so gullible on believing the Aquino magic and hype. Mahilig ka talaga sa hocus pocus. 😛

      3. @Nutzi Vincenzo

Why don’t you explain the corruption in the government of Mr. Aquino? You have heard of his cronies having P60 million and P50 million mansions. Just the tip of the iceberg.

        1. newphilrevolution.blogspot.com/2012/03/bong-naguiats-5-new-houses-and-new.html?m=1

naguiat 5 new houses in the past year including 1 worth 100 million pesos. the hypocricy and outright stealing of kkk is unbelievable, as is the fact that people actually believe the straight path slogans etc.

the wynn report will expose naguiat even more in time. get rid of the crook

      4. “Totoo namang kht mgnda daw ang gobyerno ni Marcos at mtaas daw ang ekonomiya ni Gloria e nandyan p rin ang katotohanang my gngwa p rin silang hnd magnda, at yun ay corruption at pgnanakaw”
And I got two words for you moron: hacienda luisita. Your precious mafia already broke Magsaysay’s condition and that is against the law.

“Buti nandyan ang ating bgong bayani na si Tita Cory at Tito Noy n ngblik s atin ng hustisya.”
You’re “bagong bayani”? Are you watching too much OFW drama? And what justice? Is breaking the rule of law justice?

“At yng si Miriam bstos tlga bunganga nyan buti nlang at my nktpat sya pra 2mgl bunganga nya”
And so as aguirre for being a coward on listening what MDS says to him. What’s the matter emo kid? Can’t handle the truth? Tinamaan ka ano?

Again vincensus ignoramus, you really don’t deserve to be free. You’ve done nothing but abuse your freedom only to make yourself feel better and for your precious president who also do the same.

      1. Hindi ba sinabi na nila na suplitory (supplimentary) ang mga rules of court for the impeachment court. Ibig sabihin nga may internal rules sila.

One of the things that they have allowed senator judges to do is to make manifestations.

How about Sen. Marcos? Both of them are not lawyers but they can have understanding of the rules and execute it based on their understanding unless the chair rules otherwise. As such, will you hold it against them if they were to lecture the wrongdoings of either prosecution or defense? Are you only making this an issue because you can and because it is Sen. Santiago?

Naintindihan mo ba yung tanung ko? Baka nagoverheat na braincells mo Vincenzo. Longtime no see, panay pa din ba MSG meals mo?

        1. Maybe it’s because he is still waiting for ACTA to be passed, hoping he can use it to stop the criticisms against PNut.

      2. Epic fail pa rin because you’re an anti-intellectual troll.

For anarchists like Vincenzo, there is no need for justice in order to be fair. Noynoy’s government is full of CHAOS and Vincenzo wants it. 😛

  6. There is this article that is quickly spreading via Facebook about the impeachment agenda, I don’t really know if it is entirely based on facts:

“PHILIPPINES: A SOCIAL AND POLITICAL IGNORANCE.
The Real Reason Behind the Impeachment of Chief Justice Renato Corona

The real agenda behind the impeachment of Supreme Court (SC) Chief Justice Renato Corona is to prevent the 6,000-hectare Hacienda Luisita from being distributed to its tenant-farmers by pricing it far beyond the capacity to pay of the farmers.

Informed that the plot to impeach Corona was set, Transportation and Communications Secretary Mar Roxas quickly seized the opportunity and threw in his support for Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio.

Roxas has a pending electoral protest against Vice President Jejomar Binay before the Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET) which is composed of the SC justices sitting en banc.

Roxas wants Carpio to immediately convene the PET once he is appointed Chief Justice and uphold his protest, declaring him winner over Binay.

Carpio, for his part, invited members of Congress to his condominium unit in Makati to solicit their support for Corona’s impeachment.

A member of a bloc in the Lower House and a known leftist party list congressman, also visited Carpio in his condominium unit and pledged the support of his group, which is said to command at least two million supporters nationwide.

He is one of the congressmen who signed the impeachment complaint without reading the Articles of Impeachment.

The support of this bloc is needed by Carpio, said the source as these leftist groups can easily mobilize their group in the event of a public backlash on the Corona impeachment.

It is common knowledge that Carpio has been eyeing the top seat of the High Court.

With the numbers of lawmakers and an organized group already assured, the source further alleged that maximum media exposure aimed at building public opinion against Corona, is to be provided by at least one of the country’s leading national dailies.

It will be like hitting two birds with one stone,’The Cojuangco-Aquinos retaining ownership of Hacienda Luisita and Secretary Mar Roxas taking over Vice President Binay.’

‘And that is aside from President Aquino finally having his vengeance on Arroyo and Corona.’

The plot to oust Corona was hatched at the Bahay Matanda, the ancestral house of the Cojuangcos after elderly members of the Cojuangco clan reportedy berated President Aquino for attacking members of the High Court which they believe was the reason the SC justices revoked the stock distribution option and ordered the distribution of the sugar estate to its tenants.

‘From the time of (President Ramon) Magsasay, the hacienda land was never lost. When Martial Law came, we still did not lose our land. GMA (Gloria Arroyo) and Cory had a fight during GMA’s presidency, we Cojuangcos still did not lose our land. Now that that you (Noynoy) are president, we lose the hacienda!’, the Tribune source quoted an elderly Cojuangco as he berated Aquino in the vernacular.

‘You are the reason for our loss of the hacienda, because even the Supreme Court you had to fight with!,’ the elderly Cojuangco was further quoted as telling the President.

Even before Aquino assumed the presidency, he had already openly expressed his displeasure over Corona, even refusing to be administered into office by the Chief Justice, whom he describes as one of Arroyo’s midnight appointee.

Aquino’s verbal attacks against Corona and the Supreme Court became more pronounced after the High Court issued a temporary restraining order (TRO) on the watch list order issued by Justice Secretary Leila de Lima against Mrs. Arroyo, barring her from leaving the country to seek medical treatment.

The Cojuangcos had arrived at a plan to oust Corona and have him replaced by Justice Carpio. With the Corona impeachment still fresh on the minds of the remaining justices, the threat of being their impeached will again be used against them to force them to support the dissenting opinion of Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno which states that the land price of Hacienda Luisita should be pegged at the market value in 2008, which could amount to P2.5 million per hectare based on the P500 million sale of 200 hectares of the disputed sugar estate which was converted into an industrial estate.

At P2.5 million per hectare, no one among the 6,296 farmer-beneficiaries of Luisita would be able to avail of the land, thus the vast sugar estate would remain a property of the Cojuangco-Aquino clan.

Corona and the rest of the justices want the land price of Hacienda Luisita pegged at the 1989 level which is about P40,000 to P70,000 per hectare.

But with the sword of Damocles hanging over their heads, the SC justices would have no option but to heed the whims of the President.”

    1. President is just a figurehead, then. The powers behind the throne are the Cojuangcos and the Lopezes, and are thus the real leaders in this country.

  7. We are a very patient people. These leaders have taken us for a ride. And we are still thinking they are working for us…
We are like dogs, who are too helpless, to think that we cannot jump over the fence, we are in and escape in our situations. Instead, we just lay down and wimp…
Nothing will change until, we have to change the way we think…

  8. It is already clear that Philippine Justice system needs to be restructured and the appointment of Corona is illegal…why people still think that it is about Hacienda Luisita…WAKE UP FILIPINOS LOOK AT THE REALITY..STOP DREAMING…

    1. Oh really? And you think the only way to restructure it is to break the law just like what the prosecution is doing?

    2. @JEPM

“It is already clear that Philippine Justice system needs to be restructured..”

Not by making it worse like what abNoy and his KKKK are doing.

“.. and the appointment of Corona is illegal…”

Nope, it was perfectly legal as it was decided upon by previous SC justices. This matter has been settled. No use perpetuating this myth.

“why people still think that it is about Hacienda Luisita…”

Prove it by distributing HL to those farmers equitably without placing undue and unnecessary conditions like those huge unfair taxes.

“WAKE UP FILIPINOS LOOK AT THE REALITY..STOP DREAMING…”

You’re barking at the wrong tree. Tell this to the people at rappler.com
