7.1% growth is not due to Aquinomics, it’s a continuation of GMA’s use of Keynesian Economics

It’s beginning to look at lot like Christmas. ‘Tis the season to be jolly. Filipinos are known for being a little too indulgent during the festive season. This could very well be the reason why the Philippine government and the business sector have been trumpeting good news about the economy through various media outlets —…

Why we fall for the charms of psychopaths and narcissists

Many of us have been wondering about the appeal of those morose characters in the Twilight series of movies. For that matter, I’ve often wondered what is the allure behind vampires? Not only have the mythology of vampires been behind the success of the Twilight films, they seem to have endured as cultural artefacts since…

Is the Maguindanao Massacre being commemorated in memory only of the 32 dead journalists?

Check out this screen grab from the Inquirer.net website captured at 1000H Australian EDST, 24 Nov 2012: Caption on photo reads as follows: Protesters gather in Mendiola to commemorate the third anniversary of the Maguindanao massacre. Behind them are the 32 coffins representing the journalists who were among the 58 killed in Sharif Aguak on…

China enshrines territorial claims over West Philippine Sea in newly-issued e-passport

China enshrines territorial claims over West Philippine Sea in newly-issued e-passport

Apparently Chinese nationals carrying newly-issued Chinese e-passports are now in violation of Philippine national sovereignty. Does this mean that Chinese citizens attempting to travel into Philippine territory using these documents are now banned until the violation is rectified? Perhaps affected Chinese nationals should now start thinking twice about proceeding with their travel plans. The “violation”…

Filipino viral videos: mere modern symptoms of a very old cultural dysfunction

Filipino viral videos: mere modern symptoms of a very old cultural dysfunction

As my colleague Ilda pointed out, Filipinos seem to be averse to speaking out. This may seem to be a counterintuitive assertion to make, given how Filipinos pride themselves with a tradition of flamboyant political activism, tacky spectacle in the way they practice freedom of speech in their mass media, and voluminous undifferentiated chatter in…

Filipinos who cyber-bullied #Amalayer girl showed worse behaviour than her

So I finally saw the “Amalayer” video posted on YouTube and I just had to ask myself, what the heck was the big deal? Why did this video go viral? It’s not even funny and there’s no way to tell why the girl, Paula Jamie Salvosa went ballistic towards the security guard at the LRT…

Multiply Is Being Subtracted

“Disc Six A dance remix, so I can catch the latest trend and it’ll make you scratch your head and wonder where my taste went. So now my fans are crying sellout, they say that I’ve lost my touch. They say I should just get the hell out before I do too much.” The…

‘Amalayer’ girl Paula Jamie Salvosa should have Tagaloged when she Englished

‘Amalayer’ girl Paula Jamie Salvosa should have Tagaloged when she Englished

Perhaps Paula Jamie Salvosa, a.k.a. the Amalayer lady had a bad day and navigating the steaming chaos of one of the LRT stations in Manila’s train system is not exactly the best cure for a shitty day. But I can’t help but think back to how the Japanese, in their direst days following that really…
