Said to have been said by the late reggae star Bob Marley.
This essentially means the Philippines is basically fucked. Indeed, think back and consider how many congressional “inquiries”, fact finding committees, and anti-corruption task forces mounted have actually resulted in big fish being thrown into jail. From the the Yellowtard Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) to the Pork Barrel and, later, the “Disbursement Acceleration Program” (DAP) witch-hunts to today’s flood control funds plunder scandals, none have delivered even the smallest dent to the Philippines’ culture of institutionalised crime.
Not even the true masterminds of the assassination of Philippine national “martyr”, the late former Senator Benigno ‘Ninoy’ Aquino Jr, was solved despite his wife’s and then his son’s respective stints as presidents.

Filipinos, even as they slog through flooded streets, are entertained today by the media circus surrounding the Discaya family, the who’s-who of chi chi “nepo baby” chicks, and the hat tricks in the latest Senate inquiries “in aid of legislation”. Entertained, yes, but hopeful of change? Not something to waste time or headspace on. The wisdom of the entertained is in knowing — whilst being entertained — that a good show ultimately has to end with a return to reality. Filipinos are wise that way.
After all, who are these people presuming to “investigate” corruption? Are they the actual victims of said corruption? How then do they presume to represent the aggrieved community? Rioters in Indonesia and Nepal seem to have seriously considered those questions. Not Filipinos. Filipinos are, as we’ve explored, well-equipped with the wisdom of the entertained.
If Filipinos expect a different result, why do they continue to do the same thing over and over again? Same sorts of crime, same cast of characters, same pretense of “inquiries” and “investigations” and same sorts of lame “activism”. Over and over again.
One word sums that condition up: insanity.
