Yellow “journalist” Regine Cabato in her Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) piece invokes the all-too-familiar trope of “hyper-partisan influencers, trolls, and true believers” that are “part-human, part-machine” engaging in a “long-running political influence campaign” to “cast doubt on the merits of the impeachment and quell potential outrage regarding controversies surrounding [Vice President Sara Duterte]”.
We identified five tactics used by Duterte supporters as part of a coordinated disinformation campaign meant to shape public opinion, undermine oversight, and build political power before the 2028 elections. Each tactic follows established patterns in Philippine political messaging and draws from a tried-and-true playbook of information disorder.
These are:
– Dismissal or denial of the facts
– Distortion or muddying financial and legal issues related to impeachment
– Distraction or deflection, pointing the finger elsewhere
– Emotional manipulation, portraying the Dutertes as victims rather than perpetrators
– Spreading conspiracy theories that the charges against the Dutertes are a grand plotThese messages do more than just show political support—they’re designed to influence public perception, delegitimize oversight, and consolidate political capital ahead of the 2028 presidential election.
Then again, all partisan canps are doing all the above so you have to wonder what’s her point in pulling out her victim card? It’s the same with the world order. It’s survival of the fittest so nations align and re-align accordingly.
The audience are the people, the voters who decide elections. One must note how polarized the US and the Philippines are in terms of political camps. The similarity is striking because the Americans should know better.

China’s rise is phenomenal because it wasn’t fueled by hegemony. If you think about it, while the US only had a few colonies, its intervention in other countries is tantamount to it. The Chinese stopped support for satellite states to focus on its own growth. Now it’s using trade and its economic power to win over allies and partners.
The anti-Duterte blocs in the Philippines are morons simply because while they claim to be the good versus the “evil”, they still can’t win elections and proceed to make excuses about their losses.
I wonder why the PCIJ doesn’t write about state-funded influencers who are aplenty and whose discourse is just as equally shallow as the rabid DDS.
Nobody also questions how Rappler is able to survive despite its limited audience. Its payroll is not peanuts given its editorial roster and Maria Ressa continue to travel the world promoting liberal ideology.
Where do they get their monies?
