Back to the Future 27th June 2012 hoax was fun anyway

All day on the 27th June 2012, Facebook social media star George Takei (2.1 million FB subscribers and Mr Sulu in the original Star Trek) no less was among the hundreds of netizens who passed around what looked like an image of the dashboard of Marty McFly’s (played by Michael J Fox) and Doc’s iconic DeLorean time machine in the movie Back to the Future.

Turns out it was all a hoax.

The actual date set by Doc (played by Christopher Lloyd) was the 21st October 2015. Nonetheless, fans were unfazed. “Does it really matter that much? I knew the date was wrong, but I liked the idea of faking it to 2012. Let’s fake it again next year, and the next, until we get there,” commented Estevan Reis on Facebook.

That’s ok. That just means humanity has a bit more than three years to develop the following technologies:

Flying cars
Mister Fusion
Holographic shark
Max Headroom style diner waiter robots
Vintage Macintoshes
Bionics (on McFly archenemy Biff)

…and of course, the hoverboards
